When upgrading, I know that it is not really a "huge" deal to download a zip file then upload it, but when one has many dokuwiki sites, and each is customised differently, then it does require a bit of effort to upgrade. I have written a set of shell scripts to assist in the exercise, but even that pales in comparison to the way Wordpress handles upgrades. It is so simple it is laughable.
When accessing the Admin "backed" of Wordpress (similar to the Admin link in Dokuwiki), there is a simple notification that a new version of Wordpress is available. Clicking on the link takes one to the Upgrade page, where simply clicking on the Upgrade button executes an automated script which loads the upgrade from the standard Wordpress site, installs it then verifies the install.
Less than a minute later (typically), you are running the new version of Wordpress.
As I said, it is so simple that one does it automatically when a new version is available, rather than wait until one has time to upgrade (and thereby expose one's site to potential problems).
It would be excellent if Dokuwiki could implement a similar facility.
