This should be related to the CSS used.
IE indeed has some problem with interpreting the margins for lists and this may cause part of the number to be hidden.
If you browsed the page with IE, have you also tried another browser like Firfox or Opera?
What template are you using?

Yes you are right, should be related to CSS.
I tried it with Firefox 1.5.0.4 and IE6 - both cut off the leading digits; I will give Opera a chance this evening or tomorow as I do not have it currently installed.
I'm using the sidebar template. It worked fine with 2005-09-22a and 2005-09-22e.

I may be wrong here but try adding a padding-left property in lib/tpl/sidebar/rtl.css like:
ul,ol {
margin: 0.5em 1.5em 0.5em 0;
padding-left: 7px;
}

I tried it this morning with Opera9 and the numbers were fully visible.
Thanks for your tip, to change the stylesheet. I searched a
little while until I found the right file and line.
In /lib/tpl/sidebar/design.css I changed
div.dokuwiki div.level1 {margin-left: 3px;} to 22px.
Thanks for your help!

Does this bug apply to the default template (couldn't reproduce it) or can it be closed?

It does only apply to the sidebar template - it can be closed.
