Changelog says "Users of rewrite mode 1 need to adjust their .htaccess" - but I can't find any information on *what* to adjust... So images are broken for me at the moment... -

Just have a look at the provided .htaccess.dist file. You need to add the following lines:
RewriteRule ^_media/(.*) lib/exe/fetch.php?media=$1 [QSA,L]
RewriteRule ^_detail/(.*) lib/exe/detail.php?media=$1 [QSA,L]
