FS#405 Feature request: Config editor dialog
Customization
2005-06-18hornet136
As discussed in the message board:
A comment about combining options in the config file. I assume (as
I'm new to the discussion board) that there is an overall concern
about too many options in the config file and confusion it might
bring. With that understood I have a thought about having a front end
to the configuration file itself. This would be something like the
acl admin page. This way you could give a GUIfied front end to the
conf that should help with the confusion as the config file grows over
time. It could have wiki references back to your wiki:config page
(that you could include like wiki:syntax in the distro) so that people
can have self help while checking check boxes and selecting dropdowns
etc.
Probably not a new idea but I would think it could help in the
usability over all and hopefully help with an ever growing config file
option list. I believe that having a very flexible config file with
lots of options is a good thing (within reason).
Anyway, just something I was thinking of while reading what you two
were talking about. Wish I had more time and skill to help with
patches for that. :)

Me too :-)
Your idea sounds interesting but also sounds for a lot of work too.
To get an up-to-date configuration dialog
1. the script must read DokuWiki.php
2. then read local.php
3. Interprete both and create a configuration dialog
4. collect changes from the user
5. check the input and at last
6. write a new local.php
This will guarantee that changes in DokuWiki.php (for example new option)
will automatically appear in the configuration dialog. But to be able to this
DokuWiki.php must contain information about the datatype and the possible
choices or value ranges of each configuration option too. And last but not least
to keep the display clear, options must be grouped in sections.

Yep this would be a lot of work. I hope that this would be a beneficial feature for people. Thanks
