  Using the newer DokuWiki default template, if you put a footnote in the sidebar, hovering over a wiki page footnote with the same number brings up the highlighted text from the sidebar footnote.
  
  You can see an example of this on my website's front page:

  Hover over the footnote on the third bullet point and it will show the text for the sidebar footnote.

  Is it a solution to add a static counter to Doku_Renderer_xhtml to count the rendered footnotes in document_end(). And use for a next rendered document this counter as offset?
  
  This way the footnotes aren't interchanged between the different pages/columns/rendered snippets, but the footnote references numbers are unique.
  Do i miss some cases?

  Does it make sense to put footnotes in a sidebar ... or rather, have footnotes in multiple places on a page?

  When you render a separate piece of text, independent of the page that's current rendered, you like to no mix the footnotes. When this piece is displayed separated (pop-up or other stuff people can came up with) the numbering is fine.
  
  So only in the case like a sidebar or other way of divided page (in pieces that are not a whole) i can image it is useful.
