I guess it would look a bit better, if the links in the top navigation (Admin, Profile, etc.) in the new template would have small icons.

We did that initially with the "old new" template. I like the idea specifically because it works great like that in the Arctic template. But at least the last time we tried it was a bit "too much". If any icons are added, they definitely need to be elegant and/or simple. We could play around a bit with some icons, but I wouldn't give this a high priority.

I think the icons definitely shouldn't have color, as the one in the Arctic template (if I remember that right?). So an simple and lightweight look would be the best there. I think the look of the new edit buttons, would work also good in the top navigation. I also like the look of the Android Actionbar icons (http://developer.android.com/design/style/iconography.html#action-bar) a lot, and think, that kind of style would fit also good in the top navigation.

I like them quite much. I would just have chosen the user.png icon, for the account settings, because its a bit simpler than the my-account.png

In general I'd also prefer the user.png over the my-account.png. But my reasoning was that "Update Profile" has not many user functionalities. It's just about updating 4 pieces of data. I thought something like user.png would fit much better for a user page or in front of "logged in as". It would be the most perfect for a user "portal" (from which you could get to "update profile" as well as a user page). That could be similar to the admin page, but for every logged in normal user. Unfortunately DokuWiki doesn't have that (yet).

We have decided to go with the user.png anyway. And I also just removed the icons for the site tools and only left them for the user tools, as everyone I asked felt that it was too cluttered and only the very top ones really fit.
