since the upgrade to
release 2011-05-25a "Rincewind"
no passwords shorter than 8 charaters work. Is there some kind of check implemented in the smd5 algorithm?
SHA1 even accepts "1234"
PHP version 5.3.8

Can you explain what you mean by "does not work"? I succesfully created a user with a 2 letter password and logged in with it. There is no length check in smd5.

If I create a user with a password shorter than 8 characters the user cannot login. Nevertheless the creation of the user works.
When you try to login using the new user really nothing happens. Wether is the password refused nor any other error message appears.
This happens only when smd5 is used. Any other algorithm works fine.
I hope this helps...

This works just fine for me, so please add any detail that could help. Eg. what system are you on, what versions are involved, can you reproduce this with no plugins enabled? What auth backend are you using?
