Everytime I try to change common.php, save it and start the wiki..I get an error message

it seems as if you are printing something to the browser before dokuwiki sends it's header information. did you use "print" while you made your changes to common.php?

Actually I wanted to edit function breadcrumbs(), so that when a user logs out, the trail is reset.
But I got that error message.
For testing, after restoring the original file, when I just added a comment line and saved the file, again I got the same error message.
Even if I dont do anything and save it without making any changes, the error comes.

looks like your editor is inserting a newline before the initial <?
Make sure the file starts with <? and stops with ?> without any leading or trailing chracters.
However this is hardly a bug in DokuWiki. If you modify the source it's your bug ;-)
