FS#1736 Auto recongnition of "Umlaut"-URL doesn't work correctly
Syntax
2009-08-03dasjan
I just noticed that "Umlaut-Domains" don't work correctly. If a URL with an Umlaut like http://example-with-ü-im-namen.de is contained within an article and auto-linked it will break off before the "ü".
Yes, out of a technical developer perspective I can accept this. But if you try to put yourself into a non-technical user perspective they expect each and every link to "just work". They paste a URL into the wiki article and it works. Then someone pastes a URL with an umlaut and it doesn't work. They probably won't even recognize the fact that it is related to the umlaut, but they'll just be running around screaming "wikis are stupid". So telling a simple user "well, sometimes you can just paste a link [not too complicated, anyone can do that] and sometimes, you have to put not just one, but two brackets around your link" - they won't understand this.
No offense, but this is a typical problem of OSS. The software is developed by "technical people" who often have a problem taking a non-technical user perspective. I write a lot of software for those kind of people and have become very sensitive of (small) problems like that. Creative people often even take it as a personal offense if software doesn't work (this sounds stupid, but it is just the way it is).

You are welcome to send a patch of course ;-) But this is not an umlaut only problem. As soon as you add umlauts people expect Farsi or Hebrew to work in their links as well. Can you say can of worms? ;-)
