I can choose "Compression method for attic files" with "bz2", but with "bz2" set new data/attic files are not created. So all old data of changed lines/files are lost from the moment when "bz2" is set.
I can can change back to the "gzip" and everything works normally. Again, with "bz2" no attic files are created.

I've forwarded a patch for the config plugin that prevents this value being offered if PHP does not support the bzip2 extension. This doesn't stop a user incorrectly choosing this setting if editing their configuration files manually. Is it worth DW protecting itself against such an incorrect setting?

Line 123 and following in inc/init.php should already do this protection!?

Yes. I didn't spot that. I guess this can be closed now.

The strange thing is the check was in place a long time before this bug was submitted...

Actual issue was config plugin using an incorrect value for bzip2; 'bzip' instead of 'bz2'. Patch sent.
